Obituary for Isobel Florence HASTINGS (Stewart)

HASTINGS, Isobel Florence (Stewart)
Born April 29, 1924 at Sunnybrook farm in Bright, Ontario, passed away peacefully in Kitchener, at Westmount Retirement Home, surrounded by her two cherished daughters.

Beloved wife of the late Gordon Alexander Hastings (2008). Treasured mother of Marilyn Lillian Hastings (Steve Burley), Norma Jean Sittler (Tim); predeceased by infant daughter Dianne Isobel (1949).

Proud and loving grandmother of four grandchildren, Matthew, Patrick (Katie), Lauren and Lindsay, as well as four great grandchildren, Ryan, Norah, Henry and Rhetta.

Predeceased by her parents William Russell Stewart (1974) and Florence Rutherford Crerar (1973); much loved older sister Jean Woolcott (2020), and her husband Clifford (1997), brothers and sister in laws, Harold Hastings (2006) and his wife Margaret (2013), and Mildred Diamond (2015) and her husband Maurice (1985).

Auntie will be missed by many nieces and nephews of the Woolcott, Hastings, Diamond families.

Isobel was a proud and devoted member of the Chesterfield United Church for many years. She was active in the United Church Women’s group, Chesterfield Choir, Sunday School, as well as taking over the care superintendent duties of the church after the passing of her father. Isobel baked thousands of delicious pies and shortbread for the annual Christmas bazaar, as well as for anyone who was in need, or deserved a warm welcome to the neighborhood. She had a passion for community outreach, and later in life knitted for the church prayer blanket project for Peace United Church.

Isobel’s life- long passion was her family and church. Next in priority were her duties as a farmer’s wife in the barn and fields, alongside her husband Gordon on the Glen Lee Farm, Plattsville. Isobel was a quilter, and she stitched her family together with love, care and concern. Every year she enjoyed the fruits of her labor from her garden. Later in retirement life she had a particular keen interest in following the Blue Jays, Raptors, Kitchener Rangers, and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The family would like to take the time to thank all who took the time to visit or check in by telephone, as the gift of time is what was most appreciated by Isobel.

Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at the Chesterfield United Church cemetery in the spring.
