Obituary for George Wilson GATES

GATES: George Wilson - Peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, December 7th, George Wilson Gates of Port Rowan in his 88th year.

Cherished husband and best friend of Janice Moore for close to 43 years. George loved his family so much and was so proud of them. In his words “they make my heart proud”. Loving father to Kerry and Donna Gates, Brian and Cindy Gates, and Vicki and Sheldon Schilstra all of Port Rowan. Proud grandpa and great-papa of Ryan and Nakita Gates, and Ethan and Gavyn; Amber and Layne Gobeil, and Madelyn and Maxwell; Derek and Kristen Rose, and Emerson; Jessica Schilstra and Keefer Thorne; and Matthew and Kate Schilstra. Beloved brother of Gordon and Patricia Gates of Port Rowan. Also survived by his niece Michele and Jarrod Padgett.

George had a special relationship with Janice’s sisters and their families, Ruth Ann and Terry Helmer of Pinegrove; Joan Ferris of Mount Hope; and Linda Moore of Port Rowan. And a special bond with Dave and Nicole Ferris and their sons of Dundas.

Predeceased by his parents Roe and Mildred (Wilson) Gates, sister and brother-in-law Lois and Bill McBride, and Janice's parents Charlie and Edna Moore.

George was a Life Member and Past President of the Port Rowan Legion. In his younger years he played for over 30 years with the Walsingham Senators Baseball Club winning numerous championships over the years. He had a love of horses and was a member of the Ontario Paint Horse Club. George spent his entire life on the farm enjoying working the land and tending to his animals. He also had a love of the outdoors which led him to golfing, hunting and fishing and he never turned down a chance to head to a Casino!

A public graveside service will take place Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 11:00am in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Walsingham followed by a Celebration of George's life at the Port Rowan Legion from 1-4 pm with words of remembrance at 2:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Norfolk General Hospital Foundation or the Who Did It Club would be appreciated by the family.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Jeffrey W. Glendinning Funeral Home, Port Rowan.
