Dr. Elisabeth Ruge PHD (1936-2023)

On Saturday, February 13,2023 Elizabeth (Isa) Ruge (nee Wiese) passed away suddenly in her condo in Edmonton Alberta.

The earthly loss of this beautiful soul is mourned by her numerous German Students from her 30 yr+ tenure as Professor at Camrose University, in Camrose Alberta, and previously at Laurentian University in Sudbury.

Survived by her 3 children, Alexander, Bianca and Christoph, 9 Grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.
Born in Poland on Aug 10, 1936. German was always the first language at home. Isa experienced World War II as a child, surviving the “Flucht” led by her father and mother Felix and Margarete Wiese (nee Lück) along with 47 other souls from Poland to Germany in 1942. Growing up as a refugee, and “Volks- Deutscher” in post war Germany, the family, with the sponsorship of the Baptist Church and the Goetze family, landed in Kitchener in 1952. Along with many of the other family and “souls” from Poland.

Isa began working at Electrohome, where she met her husband Gottfried Ruge, they married in 1954.
They continued to have 4 children Alexander, Bianca, Aristotle (stillborn) and Christoph.

Isa finished her high school education at night school, and later attended Waterloo Lutheran University (now Wilfred Laurier) and the University of Waterloo to earn her PhD in Scientific German. Isa was active in German Canadian student exchange program, the German-Canadian Congress and hosted a German Talk show on Rogers Cable during the 1980’s. Isa loved to talk about the weather, politics, and push a good debate. She was an avid reader, lifelong learner, traveler, and always followed her own path. Isa returned to Europe most years whilst she could. Isa was so looking forward to a trip to Ontario this spring to visit with family and friends as well as a trip to Europe with family.
